Competition Gala
The Serge Diaghilev Memorial Medal Award
For the first time in the history of Polish cultural life, on October 9th 2004, during the Competition Gala The Serge Diaghilev Memorial Medal for outstanding contribution to international choreography will be officially awarded on the stage of Danuta Baduszkowa Music Theatre in Gdynia. The Medal was created in the contemporary art gallery "Galeria 78" in Gdynia. It will be awarded annually by Medal Chapter, whose members are selected by The Serge Diaghilev Association for the Promotion of Choreography Art, to the most prominent figures of the Polish and world choreography.
This year The Serge Diaghilev Memorial Medal was granted to the most remarkable lady of the Gdansk Ballet Stage Janina Jarzynowna-Sobczak - a prominent choreographer, creator of the first dance theatre in Poland, initiator of ballet activity in Gdansk. She is the founder of the Ballet Group at Opera Studio, known as the Baltic Opera House and Philharmonics in Gdansk (1949), where, for many years (until 1976), she was the director and choreographer. She has taught and created a whole generation of dancers and choreographers. In 1950 The National School of Ballet in Gdansk was created, inspired and driven by Janina Jarzynowna-Sobczak, where until 1974, she was the Director and a head lecturer.
